Driving demand in Japan’s sakura season
Flyer for retailer L.L.Bean Japan’s special edition tote bag
The Challenge
L.L.Bean’s Japan division introduced a limited-edition version of its iconic tote bag to celebrate the annual cherry blossom festival. Since this exclusive release fell outside the brand’s standard catalog cycle, the team needed an effective way to drive demand. To reach customers directly, we designed a flyer to be inserted into catalog mailings.
Solution and Outcomes
With the spring product photography already completed, a special photo shoot was required to properly showcase the tote. I was asked to art direct the shoot, working with a local photographer to highlight the bag’s unique red and pink colour scheme. To enhance the visual appeal, I worked with the merchandising team to style the shoot using carefully selected L.L.Bean outdoor accessories, reinforcing the connection to the brand’s core offerings.
The design balanced warm cherry blossom tones with cooler background elements, evoking the atmosphere of hanami—Japan’s beloved cherry blossom viewing tradition. Clear pricing and item details ensured easy ordering via phone, which was the brand’s primary sales channel at the time.
The campaign was a resounding success—the tote bag sold out within weeks and went on to become a collector’s item both in Japan and internationally.
