Building user journeys brick by brick
LEGO rental ecommerce website design and development
The Challenge
An innovative entrepreneur with a passion for Lego building approached me with a vision: to transform this passion into a sustainable business that also promotes environmental consciousness.
The core challenge was to create a digital platform that could seamlessly blend two distinct models: a membership-based community and a traditional e-commerce rental service. The platform needed to be user-friendly and intuitive for both young and mature audiences, enabling them to easily navigate, subscribe, and rent Lego sets.
Solution and Outcomes
I began by developing a series of design mockups to visualise the user journey, from initial site entry and membership onboarding to the subsequent rental process. This approach allowed the client to gain a clear understanding of the proposed user experience and provide valuable feedback early in the design phase. Following client approval, I created a detailed requirements document, outlining the technical specifications and functional needs of the project. To address the complex integration of membership and e-commerce functionalities, I collaborated with a skilled WooCommerce backend specialist.
This collaboration tackled several key challenges:
- Membership-Restricted Rentals: Ensuring that only logged-in members could access and complete rental transactions.
- Tiered Access: Implementing a system to restrict the rental of high-value Lego sets to members who had maintained their subscriptions for a minimum of three months.
- Automated Rental Management: Developing an automated system to track and limit the number of concurrent rentals per user, with a maximum of two sets allowed at any given time.
Outcome: A Platform for Circular Economy and Playful Engagement
The resulting website was delivered on time and within budget, providing the entrepreneur with a powerful platform to launch and scale his business. The site owner is now actively promoting the platform nationwide, highlighting its unique value proposition: reducing plastic consumption by enabling more people to access a wide range of Lego sets, including rare and expensive ones, without the need for outright purchase. The platform successfully combines a passion for creativity with a commitment to sustainability, fostering a community of Lego enthusiasts while promoting a circular economy model.
